“Les Jumeaux de Virgine” by James Coignard

€3,150.00

Carborundum etching with collage and hand-applied pigment, signed and numbered in pencil by the artist.

A richly layered mixed-media print by French artist James Coignard (1925–2008), one of the foremost innovators of the carborundum etching technique. Trained at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Nice, Coignard began his career as a painter before developing a unique approach that merged painting, sculpture, and printmaking. From the 1950s onward, he exhibited internationally and became associated with the École de Nice, alongside artists such as Arman and Yves Klein.

In Les Jumeaux de Virgine, Coignard combines embossed textures, gestural marks, and symbolic forms in his characteristic visual language — layered silhouettes, typographic fragments, and hand-painted crosses. The work captures his interest in materiality and the physical act of creation, where pigment, paper, and form become intertwined.

Size: 60 cm x 77 cm

Condition: The print is in very good condition, with vivid colour and no tears or losses. Minor natural waviness to the paper due to the artist’s technique. The brown fabric-covered backing board shows light wear to the corners and a small water markalong the lower edge. The biographical note on the reverse presents foxing from age, without affecting the artwork.

The piece is mounted but not glazed, and should be reframed for optimal preservation and presentation.

Price is based on the artwork itself, excluding any reframing or restoration costs.
